Why software matters

Fundamentally, we can view computers as tools that allow us to do things faster, better, and cheaper. In other words, they allow us to do more with less by giving us another form of leverage.

Fundamentally, we can view computers as tools that allow us to do things faster, better, and cheaper. In other words, they allow us to do more with less by giving us another form of leverage.

However, unlike other forms of tooling, computers are inherently general purpose. Meaning, as a tool they are not restricted a specific or related set of problem domains, but which can be specialised by software to create new specialised tools. These programmed computers, can then become powerful tools in a specific field or problem.

This ability of computers to be programmed, is what makes them such a ubiquitous and powerful tool for businesses and society in general. Therefore software matters.

Your company may not be in the software business, but eventually, a software company will be in your business. - Naval
